Abraham Lincoln was a very honest man and when he was young he had received the nickname “Honest Abe”. Lincoln as commander in chief was honest and straightforward with his generals, always telling them directly what he did and did not appreciate about them. In search for the reason Lincoln was so adamant about honesty, a quote by one of his closest friends, Leonard Swett, is revealing: "He believed in the great laws of truth, the right discharge of duty, his accountability to God, the ultimate triumph of the right, and the overthrow of wrong." That night after he closed the store, he walked three miles to return the customer’s money. While he was working as a store clerk he realized he mistakenly took six cents to much from as customer so he decided to walk three miles to return it. Not only did Lincoln have an honest opinion on things he also made sure that everyone got what they deserved or payed for otherwise he would return or give what they deserved. In conclusion, it is clear to see why Abraham Lincoln was so honesty and why he was called “Honest Abe”, because he made sure everyone had what they deserved, and he would tell his opinion on things he thought needed to be said.
